drive south west of Calgary on the edge of Kananaskis Country. Turner Valley is the birthplace of Alberta's oil and gas industry, the site of the 1914 Dingman #1 well that began Calgary's first oil boom. Just 3 km east of Turner Valley lies the picturesque boomtown of Black Diamond. Named after the abundant coal deposits that were found in the late 1800s. Black Diamond is the gateway to the ranchlands along the Cowboy Trail. 15 minutes south of Black Diamond lies the Village of Longview. After oil was discovered in Turner Valley in 1914 the area boomed and "Little New York" was born. The community eventually shifted a few miles west of it's present location and re-assumed with the name Longview. Fri, 20 May 2005 13:11:44 -0400Millarville Area
