TURNER VALLEY OILFIELD SOCIETY

The Turner Valley Oilfield Society is a registered not profit society formed on
June 14, 1978. The Society’s purpose is to promote the gas plant as an interpretative
center and to promote awareness of the history of the Oilfields.

In the early 1970’s residents of the area began to realize that the Turner Valley
area had experienced a multitude of significant events over the past 80
years. It became evident there was a need to document and celebrate the
achievements of the pioneer ranchers and oil men and ensure that the historical
Significance of these events were not forgotten. The Society has undertaken
the task to promote an awareness of significant historic sites in the district
and to promote an awareness of the sites amongst residents, traveling public
and individuals seeking information.

In the early 1980’s, the society began identifying sites that were significant to the
rich historic fabric of the area. This resulted in the documentation of possible
sites for a driving and walking tour of the Turner Valley District. in the mid
1990’s a booklet was published by the Society in cooperation with Alberta
Community Development identifying significant sites.

Although a fascinating booklet, full of excellent facts and photos and along
with site specific signage the Society feels that with our age of electronic
media a Turner Valley Oilfields Society Web Site specific to the area including a
section for electronic greeting cards would open a world of possibilities for future
students and tourist traffic. As the discovery of oil in the Turner Valley Oilfields was a very significant event during this millennium a web site would
help to show the contribution The Turner Valley Oilfields made to a very important
part of Canada’s history around the world.

The Turner Valley Oilfield Society meets on the 4th Thursday of every month
at the town of Turner Valley office at 7:30pm. We invite anyone interested
in the oil and gas industry to attend and become a member.
Presently the Society is working on a business plan to help make the intrepretive center a reality.
