Preservation & Reclamation of Site
To date Alberta Infrastructure and Alberta Community Development have spent $2.4 million on environmental studies, remediation and preservation work.
Alberta Infrastructure has completed the following cleanup work:
Asbestos has been removed or encapsulated
Biohazards have been removed
Remediation of mercury is substantially complete. Air quality testing is scheduled for next summer
Removal of the underground storage tanks is complete. A few underground tanks were retained because of their historical significance or because their removal would have jeopardized the historic buildings. Those tanks have been cleaned out and were filled with concrete.
Sulphur remediation is complete. Sulphur has been removed and lime has been added to the soil to restore it to its Ph level. New gravel has been brought in to return the surface to its original grade.
The river diversion project was completed in the spring of 2004.
The next major reclamation project is to install a containment system.
Alberta Environment has indicated that the river diversion alone is not sufficient to ensure contaminants will not continue to enter the Sheep River. The long-term solution to preventing contaminants entering the Sheep River is to erect a permanent containment system and institute a long-term monitoring program. Alberta Community Development has prepared a submission requesting capital funds for this work.
The submission also includes a request for capital funds for preservation work on the historic resources.
Alberta Community Development has set up a website to provide information on the site and it remediation. The site is durrently being updated. It is located at: www.turnervalley.gov.ab.ca
