New Business - Museum

Moved by Jim to approve the minutes of April 9, 2009 with the following amendments, carried

Congratulations on Lauren Harper

Maureen is going to attend the Chamber meeting

Old Business:

Driving Tour Booklets – Jim sent everyone an email on this, if we want to

proceed we need to get the grant done. Would have to say what we would contribute

the maximum they would contribute would be $3000. Sharlene will find out which grant

we need to fill out. Deadline for the grant is September 1.

We can get $6000 worth of booklets printed

License Plates – nothing more done on this at all, do we want them right now

as we have no where to store. Maybe next summer for the tourist booth.

Sign Project – Street signs and tree sign. Maureen has spoke with one of the

principal partners from Everwood. Maureen will meet with them to come up with historical

names. Joy moves that Maureen works with Everwood people.

VIC – we would like to be part of their historical signage.

Mash Sign - put on hold at present when several other things have been put in place

then we can go forward. See Joy's report below.

Joy’s Report – Joy believes that TVOS should put the idea of making a “MASH” sign tree on hold for

The present. When several other things have been put in place in Turner Valley, then the idea can

Be worked on again. Joy spoke with Jonathan Ywen, and this has got her thinking!

Several things are currently being considered that impact on the eventual construction of a sign tree:

1. A tourist booth (movable structure) on the parking lot at Flare N Derrick, current, but not

permanent location.

2. Parks and Pathways – a)their construction of network of paths

b)the naming of various pathways

3. The naming of new streets and avenues with historic names (w/suggestions & input from TVOS)

4. Designs needed to show the historic names of the street or area, (Joy has a few sketches to contribute) as well as the numbered street/avenue signs. This may mean 2 signs on a pole: for the regular name & the historic name.

5. Information plaques to be erected in each historic area, eg. Snob Hill, Poverty Flats, etc (Jonathan’s idea)

6. TVOS can work in harmony with Town council & the other committees for integrated final best results

Oil Show – from the 9th – 11th, setting up on the 7th. Extra passes are here for anyone wishing

To attend.

Joy will attend on a Wednesday. 10 X 10 booth, top of display sets up as a table where

we can have our stuff. Attendee for us will get more involved in the historical aspect of the

community. Brochure made up by Maureen, Business Cards went over very well where Joy

handed out 80 or so. Sharlene will make more. Moved by Sharlene that we get 200 of the

brochures made for Discovery Days if necessary she will get more made at Staples for

the Oil Show. “The Great Canadian Oil Patch” is what we will have at the Oil Show to

give away in a draw. Maureen to have the book written in stating that it is from the Turner Valley

Oilfield Society. Sharlene will get the business cards printed. Moved by Gary that we ask

Heritage Park if they would like the brochure also Devon, carried. Maureen to ask Travel Alberta

if they would take info in the accredited VIC's

Website - to May 27, 2009 210,967

Year to date – 2,475,416 hits

Workshop – Sharlene has contacted Alberta Community Spirit – they don't do it anymore

Sharlene has already contacted Wayne Page now it would cost us $400 as he is now working contract

but has all the background. Joy suggests that we hold off on deciding on what we are going to do

Make sure that if we do any name changes that we go through all the steps as far as our society status goes so we don't run into the same problems as we have this year.

Cost of banner and 2 magnetic signs was $84 in total.

Table for Discovery Days – suggested that we do both Friday and Saturday.

Gary will clear it with Stan that we borrow a couple of chairs and a table

and put them outside or just inside the door of the Flare N Derrick.

Take the derrick out of the trailer of the cable tool rig that is down at the plant to put on

The table as a display

Jim will get a hold of Ron Johnston to get into the trailer.

Jim spoke with Ian Clark regarding the film that we had from the National Film Board

now it is up in Edmonton. Ian will bring them out to us when he gets them back.

We need the stuff by the 5th from the trailer, Gary, Jim and Sharlene will pick up.

Need to have the table inside in case of weather and wind. Should be selling the

memberships, books, etc at DV Days.

Maureen will take orders for the books at the oil show

Painting – Art is in the eye of the beholder. Helmut Linser was a geologist, a mathematician and

a painter. Donated but if we decide at anytime to sell they would like ½ the money. Letter to go to the dona tors. Do we need to insure this. We need to have it hung

on the wall as it is vulnerable where it is right now. Maureen will right up history of the painting.

Someone needs to talk to the town for hanging and insurance. Gary to ask Stan to get a couple of the guys to hang once it has been insured.

Museum – early last fall we had heard that the province was considering putting in a museum

If nothing is going to happen for several years. Consider approaching John Kirinic about the buildings on Main Street to see if we could put in something temporary.

A letter from the Town should be sent to the province to release the report from the advisory

board. Money hasn't been committed much further than the Horton sphere's and clean up.

Sharlene to write a letter to both councils to put some pressure on the province to release the report.

Need to find out for sure if there is or isn't a museum being developed for TV other than the interpretive center.

Jim to have a meeting with someone from the government in charge of collections.

Approval of the treasuer's report – Bank Balance as of April 30 - $11,438.72

GIC – annual turn over worth $63,000.00

Great Canadian Oil Patch Sharlene will ask if we can put in the library for sale.
