New panel to review viability of Turner Valley Gas Plant
Edmonton... A new panel will review the Alberta government's efforts to clean up the Turner Valley Gas Plant and provide advice on the future of this historic site. The 12-member Turner Valley Gas Plant Resolution Advisory Panel will include municipal, environmental and stakeholder representatives.
The panel will review all tests and reports to date. It will provide advice about the reclamation work as well as short and long term management of the site. The panel also will liaise with the neighboring communities, undertake appropriate stakeholder consultation, and make a final recommendation to the Minister of Community Development on the viability of the Turner Valley Gas Plant as a provincial historic resource.
"We heard the community's concerns. This panel will review our ongoing efforts to clean up the Turner Valley Gas Plant and recommend the best possible plan for the future," said Gary Mar, Minister of Community Development. "We continue to work with health, environment and other experts to ensure the site is safe."
Organizations represented on the panel will propose members for the Minister's approval. Alberta Community Development will provide coordination, administrative and technical support to the panel. Technical advisors from the Calgary Health Region, Alberta Environment and Alberta Infrastructure and Transportation will provide additional support.
The plant is the earliest and best surviving example of a gas plant in Canada. The Alberta government acquired the site in 1988. It was designated a Provincial Historic Resource in 1989 and a National Historic Site in 1995.
